When you operate a small business, you’ve got to make the most of your time every day. Your managerial style has a significant influence on your overall productivity and that of your support team. In addition to the people who you manage directly, you also need to carefully manage the relationships that you have with third-party companies such as vendors or subcontractors who you rely on to get your work done. Here are some strategies that can help small business owners manage their day-to-day operations effectively and adaptively.

Surround Yourself with Exceptional Team Mates

In the world of small business world management, the individuals who make up a workforce often need to wear a few different hats in their job positions. As a practical matter, the realities of what they may need to do in a workday won’t totally match up with their job descriptions.

A good team member is generally willing to do whatever is needed to make sure that the things which need attention get it. At the same time, they recognize that they may not be able to handle everything themselves. They’re willing to reach out to other team members and apply their exceptional communication skills to handle things or troubleshoot problems collaboratively.

It’s imperative that you make calculated choices about the people you choose to rely on closely. You need to have enough confidence in their abilities and resourcefulness in a challenging environment. You also need to feel comfortable about delegating important tasks to key staff members.

Address Personnel Issues Immediately

Even excellent employees can falter in their job roles at times. In some cases, they may be struggling with specific duties that don’t match up with their skill set. Also, it is natural to expect that problems experienced outside of the workplace could have a detrimental effect on their performance on the job at some point in their employment.

Small business managers need to address issues constructively. Expressing frustration toward a staff member without getting to the root of an issue or offering guidance on how to correct it is a futile and impractical reaction. Employees need to be accountable, but good management entails a willingness to help them resolve issues.

Making the most of your time at work requires that you help your frontline staff be as productive as possible. A good manager identifies potential team members who will be able to make a strong contribution and intercedes as soon as employees are failing to meet expectations.
